Couple sitting beside radiator and freezing

It’s a chilly winter day, and your home just won’t warm up— what’s wrong?

Home heating issues can be frustrating. They’re often caused by furnace problems, unfortunately. We depend on our furnace to comfortably heat our homes in winter, but they are complex machines and often subject to problems.

Furnace troubleshooting can be tricky, especially if you’re not quite sure what the problem is. If you need assistance, read on to learn the seven most common furnace problems— and what you can do about them.

1. Thermostat Issues

Sometimes, homeowners think they are having furnace issues, but the problem is actually with their thermostat.

If it doesn’t seem to be working, the first step is always to try replacement batteries or see if any circuits in your home have tripped. Failing that, you may need a replacement thermostat, a job that can easily be done by a furnace professional.

The thermostat breaker can also malfunction if dust or debris have gotten inside it, so sometimes giving it a clean can solve your problems. Corrosion on the outside or inside of the system can also be a red flag, indicating a replacement unit is needed.

2. Dirty Filters

One of the most common furnace problems is dirty filters. Furnace filters work by protecting your system from dust, hair, pet fur, and debris that get pulled into your ductwork.

Over time, the filters get clogged and dirty. While this stops the debris from getting into your furnace, it also stops your furnace from working efficiently.

When filters are dirty, your system has to work harder to produce the same output. This means increased electricity bills, extra strain on your furnace system, and your house may not be as warm as you’d like it.

One of the simplest ways you can look after your system is by cleaning or replacing your furnace filters regularly, about every three months.

3. Pilot Light Not Igniting

If your pilot light or ignition won’t light, your furnace won’t be able to operate. This could be caused by a few different issues.

First, your gas supply might not be working or could be turned off. You can test this by seeing if your gas stove is working. If so, the problem is probably with the furnace, not the gas line.

The furnace could have been unplugged, disconnected, or a recent power outage could have tripped the circuit. Newer systems ignite electrically, so if the electricity supply to your furnace is interrupted, this could stop it from working.

Or, you may have a faulty pilot light or one that is burned or dirty.

The easiest and safest way to solve any pilot light issues is by contacting a local professional to determine the cause of the problem.

A local heating expert can provide quick and affordable solutions to all of your furnace and HVAC issues.

4. Furnace Is On But Not Blowing Air

Another common problem faced by homeowners is when the furnace is turned on, but no hot air is blowing out of the vents.

This could be caused by several factors. Your furnace may have a broken fan belt, which would need to be replaced. The fan belt helps power the motor of your furnace, which pumps out hot air.

If the belt breaks, which can frequently happen, then it’ll need replacing before the system can work again. You’ll need to make sure the belt has the right tension, as if it’s too loose or too tight, the belt may come off or break again.

Or, if the furnace is working properly, but the hot air isn’t coming out of the ducts, you could have broken or damaged ductwork.

5. Strange Noises

If you notice strange noises, such as grinding, squeaking, or rattling, this is an indication of a problem with your furnace.

These could be caused by a wide range of factors, so the best bet is to call a professional. Squeaking sounds could be caused by a loose fan belt or you may need to oil your furnace.

If you are hearing bangs or thumps, this could be caused by an unbalanced blower wheel or motor.

Are you living in an older house? If so, there’s a good chance that your furnace is old as well. Although regular maintenance is the best way to look after any furnace, the average lifespan is between 15-20 years.

If yours is around that age, it may be time for a replacement furnace. Newer models are often more energy-efficient, so a new system can save you money in the long run.

6. Your Home Smells Like Gas

If you smell gas in your home, either from your furnace or elsewhere, this is a serious problem and not to be taken lightly.

Evacuate the home and contact your gas company to come out and inspect the premises. In an emergency situation, always call 911.

If you can, turn off all gas appliances and shut off your gas supply as well. Keep everything switched off until you’re informed they’re safe to use again.

7. Home Feels Cold Even When Furnace Is On

Does your home still feel chilly, even if the furnace is on? This could be due to blocked or broken ductwork, allowing the hot air to escape before it can reach all the rooms of your house.

Or, your furnace may be too small for your home. If your furnace is small, it may not have enough power to generate enough heavy to warm your home.

In that case, you may need to replace it with a larger system.

If you’re constantly turning up the thermostat to keep your home warm, this could lead to high electricity bills.

Help lower bills in the winter by putting on warmer clothes and lowering it by a few degrees, shutting doors to rooms you don’t need to heat, and repairing any drafty windows or doors.
